MONTREAL -- The U. S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the first drug, a generic version of Viagra, that will be marketed at the high-priced Canadian drugstore.
The generic version of Pfizer Inc.'s Viagra will be available for $9.99 at the Canadian Drugstore on March 1, and for $16.99 on March 26.
The FDA approved the drug for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men, which is a common condition that affects up to one in five men. The drug is also available in generic form.
The drug works by blocking the effects of a chemical called cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). cGMP is a chemical that relaxes muscles and increases blood flow to the penis. It relaxes the arteries in the penis, allowing blood to reach the male organ that produces the erection.
Viagra is the first non-prescription generic drug for treating erectile dysfunction, and it will be available by mail order on the U. store's website at $9.99.

CVS will continue to sell Viagra at stores that require a prescription, Ditka added.
“We’ve been selling a variety of prescription-only drugs for many years,” he said.
CVS will sell Viagra at Target stores beginning Friday, or by the third, CVS said, and will have a number of stores open at the CVS counter. The stores will have an average of 50 Viagra pills per store.
For more than five years, CVS has been selling erectile dysfunction medication, including Viagra, at stores that require a prescription, and also at the CVS, Walgreens and Target stores. The company has also been selling Viagra at both CVS and Walgreens.
“As we continue to expand, we believe that the sales volume will continue to increase with continued sales of the medications and the continued growth of the overall consumer health care system in the United States,” Ditka said.
He added that CVS has the largest sales force at the moment.
The CVS’s store will have about 30 Viagra pills, and the Walgreens stores will have about 50.
